C.A.R.E. of Maryland
C.A.R.E of Maryland addresses the needs of oncology patients, including loss of function, strength, energy, range of motion and aerobic capacity. There can be many negative side effects of cancer treatment. Staying active, regular exercise, eating well and having a strong support system in place can help manage these symptoms.
C.A.R.E of Maryland is customized to fit the individual needs of patients at all stages of treatment. The program helps to maintain functional abilities in occupational, social and familial roles and to continue to enjoy hobbies and recreation activities. According to the American Cancer Society, “many oncology teams are now urging patients to be as physically active as possible during cancer treatment.”
Regular exercise during cancer treatment can:
- Reduce symptoms of fatigue and nausea
- Lessen dependence on others to perform normal activities of daily living
- Increase ability for the body to heal
- Improve self-esteem and ability to keep social contacts
- Lower risk of anxiety and depression
C.A.R.E. of Maryland Benefits
With C.A.R.E of Maryland, patients receive a complete physical therapy evaluation that includes a thorough neuromuscular assessment as well as balance & functional screening. The physical therapist will identify problem areas, set appropriate goals and develop a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs. Your diagnosis, stage of treatment and current medical condition will be taken into consideration when developing your treatment plan. We will work closely with your physician at all stages of rehabilitation.
Your C.A.R.E. Program
Our Physical Therapists utilize their expertise in therapeutic exercise, disease processes and nutrition to develop a comprehensive program specifically for you. With our help, patients are more dedicated to C.A.R.E in comparison to traditional self-pay and self-directed fitness programs.
C.A.R.E of Maryland includes one-on-one and/or group sessions which are directed and supervised by a physical therapist. Each session is conducted in a supportive and non-intimidating atmosphere that encourages socialization among patients experiencing similar difficulties. Classes may include active flexibility exercises, balance and coordination activities, resistance training, cardiovascular conditioning and weight management strategies.
Education is an important part of this program. Not only are patients instructed in ways to manage pain and fatigue, they are taught exercise modifications and are provided with demonstrations on proper body mechanics. It is our hope that the education, understanding and training patients receive with C.A.R.E of Maryland will become an integral part of everyday life.
Patients are encouraged to attend C.A.R.E of Maryland two to three times per week. Our program is provided by licensed physical therapist and is covered by medical insurance. We work with patients to minimize their out-of-pocket-expenses in an effort to avoid financial hardships. Each patient’s physical therapist will always communicate with and provide regular updates to their Oncology/Medical team.
